Yaka Huni Kuin (Aĩbu Collective)

Biography

Yaka Huni Kuin is from the Chico Curumim Village in the Kaxinawa Indigenous Land of the Jordão River, in the state of Acre. She is a visual artist and forest apprentice, currently living in Jordão. Yaka Huni Kuin incorporates the cosmovision, the traditional songs and the visions from the Nixi Pae (ayahuasca) in her work.

Besides painting, Yaka Huni Kuin also works with geometric patterns (kene), traditional handicrafts, body paintings and music. The culture of the Huni Kuin people has art at its essence, through song, graphics and symbolism. The artist sees her practice as an important way to share her culture with other Indigenous groups and to help people feel “the feminine strength of the forest.”
